art to inspiration-culture clash

happy 4th of july everyone.

art to inspiration is a blogging collaborative project. each month a piece of art is chosen, and bloggers post their inspiration to the artwork. this month's piece is a photo by smita jacob. learn more about the art to inspiration project here

title : healing yoga with aarti
name of artist : smita jacob
                     url :

what provoked me most about the photo was the juxtaposition of aarti in her traditional sari against the contemporary toronto backdrop. i put together a culture clash collage in response.

an ethnic patterned map, a great read, a tribal union jack, hooters in chinatown, asian inspired taco truck,  japadog, a aztec/navajo inspired iphone cover, an american flag turban, americana jack rogers. red white and blue evil eye bracelets.

organize your recipes and shopping: zip list

organizing your shopping list and favorite recipes is a must when cooking for one. it makes it easy avoid buying items you do not need, and use the items you have already purchased. lately i have been using zip list and i love it!

you can use zip list online or through an app on your smart phone. it allows you to import recipes from virtually any website (not only do they have a wide range of partners, but there is a very on-point "zip it button" you can add to your browser that will detect the recipe and upload all the ingredients into your recipe box!). you can add any of your recipes to your shopping list. when you are adding the items, it will allow you to uncheck boxes of items you do not need to buy.

one of the newest features is the meal planner. you can add recipes to your meal queue to plan meals weeks in advance. by searching recipes you can find meals with similar ingredients so you can plan weekly meals with fresh ingredients. you can even sync the meals with ical or google calendar, so you will always remember what you have planned for dinner!

this is how i've been using ziplist, but they also have features for sharing recipes with friends, adding specific items to a shopping list by scanning the barcode (non-single readers--your husband will have no excuse for buying the wrong milk), and gathering coupons.

if you have not already. i suggest checking out zip list. it makes meal planning so easy, and i love keeping my favorite recipes in one place.

do you use ziplist? if not how do you organize your meals and shopping?

running style

i am a pretty avid runner, but the dc heat has me less enthusiastic. hopefully some new tennis shoes and cute gear will give me some extra motivation.

the trapeze swinger

a couple of months ago i did something crazy--well for me any way. i took a trapeze class! although i'm not sure if i will do it again, i never really got used to being on top of the platform, it was exhilarating to fly through the air for a moment!

here i go

blogs i love: once a month mom

image via susy morris

last week i shared with you a couple tips for cooking for one. one great tip is to freeze extra food. by freezing you can create a surplus of homemade food when you have extra time, and then reheat it quickly at your leisure! perfect for the busy professional cooking for one.

one great resource is once a month momon her blog she has a monthly menu (i always check out the diet and the vegetarian), additional daily recipes, and resources for the beginner freezer cooker!

i used to buy store bought turkey and veggie burgers, but i love to have homemade frozen ones on hand for when i need a quick meal mid-week.

i was really unsure and nervous about starting to freeze meals--i get especially concerned with meat! i found the following resources really helpful to start:

if i had a million dollars-

images by andy warhol

last week i received an invitation to join is a search engine that is part of the art genome project. you can search art work, learn about connections between artworks, and buy art.

i wish i could afford to buy some of the art on, but collecting art is an expensive hobby. i have been having a great deal of fun searching through art and learning about new artists.

the site is completely searchable by artist, style, subject matter, medium, and region. how cool is that! they are already working with several galleries, so even though the site is in a private beta phase, there is still plenty of art to intrigue you for hours.

i've been looking at some of andy warhol's celebrity polaroids (they were recently in an exhibit at nyc's danziger gallery). i love the picture of tina turner--she seems so serene when she isn't performing! i have also been looking and learning about some newer artists. makes it so simple to learn about new artists in categories that interest you! is in a private beta phase, but you can request an invite here. i also have a few invites that i can share, so message me and i may be able to help you out.

happy first day of summer

its finally here! i hope everyone has a great first day of summer and can make it outside for some play time.

a couple of years ago one of my friends told me i was flakey. i was so offended, until i thought about it and realized it was true. i had/have a bad habit of trying to please people and  i would commit to things that i couldn't follow through with. i would constantly cancel at the time i should have been meeting someone, or tell people i was on my way when i was not even close to being there.

not only is it a horrible reputation to be labeled a flake, but have you ever had anyone change plans on you? it is not fun at all! after reading this post this morning, i thought i would share some tips that i used to change (errr...well i still have my moments)

all the single ladies (and men too)

this feature is for all my fellow readers cooking for one, eating stale bread, brown avocados, and lean cuisines. together we will learn more about cooking for one (healthy cooking! natch, we are single--with figures to keep!)

most recipes are not made for one person! the most important advice i can give is to be creative and let go of being perfect. you shouldn't let a missing ingredient or kitchen appliance get in the way of trying a new recipe. don't be afraid to swap ingredients. definitely don't buy things that you don't like or won't finish!  even the greatest chefs do this--it simply is not cost effective to have a ton of different ingredients, or an ingredient that is only used in one dish.

if i had a million dollars, oui edition

these charming maison martin margiela wedges would look amazing with ankle length jeans or a pencil skirt.

i may be able to score a similar look for less this fall; h&m announced today a collaboration with maison martin margiela. im excited to see how the french line's innovative and eccentric designs translates to retail at h&m. the line debuts nov. we have a while to wait quite some time.

are you excited to see maison martin margiela's h&m line?

cool color combo: navy and fuschia

while in a sleep haze last thursday morning, i threw on one of my favorite navy cardigans over a fuschia maxi dress and fell in love with the outfit. naturally i started browsing for more ways to try the color combo. the look can veer a little bit too preppy, but with a little bit of edge it makes for a killer color combo. i'm dying to try a navy dress with a fuchsia lip like in 2 above (i read on nasty gal's blog that they use this lipstick).

loving trina turk with banana republic

banana republic's collaboration with trina truk debuts to the public today! they had a preview sale yesterday for banana card members.

i am really loving this line! i'm particularly smitten with the botanical print shown in the top above. this print has a stunning mix of bright coral and turquoise, but incorporates in a small cluster of unexpected black. it is a very interesting print!

what do you think of me? really...

do you ever wonder what you friends really think about you? what are your vices?

i read this interesting lifehacker post last week. it suggests asking your friends to honestly critique you on how you act. the things you do that annoy them, bad habits, etc. there is even a app where they can do it anonymously! (there really is an app for everything)

i think constructive criticism is important for growth, but actively polling your friends for critiques may make one seem insecure and high maintenance. to some extent our quirks, things that may be annoying to some, make us endearing to others and make us who we are. to be honest, the article reminded me if the episode of "the office" where michael opens the dunder mifflin's suggestions box and everyone tells him he has BO.

would you poll your friends for you faults? do you think it is a valuable practice? what would you think if your friend sent you a poll?

if i had a million dollars...i'd spend it all

glamping! pictures from here, here, here, and here.

you can't take it with you when you go! "if i had a million dollars" is going to be a reoccurring feature on my blog. it's my chance to dream, be uber-materialistic, and swamp you guys with disgustingly expensive shoes, vacations, cars--whatever i'm swooning over that week!

today, its a weekend of "glamping" at firefly music festival in dover, de. firefly music festival is the east coast answer to coachella and bonnaroo, and is debuting this july. not only do they have an amazing lineup, but they have GLAMPING! for a cool, $1,500 a night (no, that does not include your tickets) you can have a tent with a bed in it (two twins or a queen), late night snacks, a breakfast buffet, private air conditioned showers and restrooms. now that is how you do a music festival!

are any of you headed to firefly music festival this year?

have any of you ever glamped?

summer, summer, summertime

my favorite thing about summertime is that there always seems to be something going on. on Thursday, I just walked into a free concert on my way home from work. i decided to make my commute a little sweeter with some frozen yogurt and a couple tunes before hopping on the metro.

summer wedding style

i am in love with the sleeves and neckline on this dress... so elegant and timeless. perfect for a wedding on a cool summer night. pssssst: The shoes and earrings are on sale!!!

hi, I am kara

hello, i am kara. i'm so excited to be writing my first post!

blogging has been something i have contemplated for a long time: i am a professional blog reader of sorts--it gets me through my 9-5. i always came up with reasons not to blog, because i'm absolutely like none my favorite bloggers...

i don't have cute children, a wedding to plan, or a fabulous jet-setting life. i am too poor to buy designer clothes and the only camera i own is on my iPhone. in fact this may be the worst lifestyle blog you ever read!

just kidding, i feel i have a lot to contribute and i cannot wait to get to know all my future readers and share some of my life with you!
